Wheat is a common grain in dog food that provides carbohydrates and some protein. While nutritious, it's one of the more common allergens in dogs and has fallen out of favor with some pet owners.
Nutritional Content
- Carbohydrates: Primary energy source
- Plant protein: Contains gluten proteins
- B vitamins: Thiamin, niacin, folate
- Minerals: Iron, zinc, magnesium
- Fiber: Supports digestive function
Forms in Dog Food
- Whole wheat/Ground wheat: Complete grain
- Wheat flour: Finely ground wheat
- Wheat gluten: Concentrated protein portion
- Wheat middlings: By-product of flour production (lower quality)
- Wheat bran: Outer fiber layer
Allergen Concerns
Wheat is considered one of the more common food allergens in dogs. Signs of wheat sensitivity may include:
- Itchy, irritated skin
- Ear infections
- Digestive problems
- Excessive licking of paws
Note: True wheat allergies are still relatively rare. Many dogs tolerate wheat without issues.
Gluten Sensitivity
Unlike celiac disease in humans, true gluten intolerance is rare in dogs—with one notable exception. Irish Setters can have a genetic condition causing gluten sensitivity. For most other breeds, gluten is not a concern.
Quality Considerations
- Whole wheat is more nutritious than refined wheat products
- Wheat middlings and wheat mill run are lower-quality by-products
- Multiple wheat ingredients suggest wheat is a primary component
- Look for whole grains paired with quality meat proteins
