Details

Common Use

Omega-3 source and fiber supplement in dog food.

Flaxseed (also called linseed) is added to dog food as a plant-based source of omega-3 fatty acids and fiber. It supports skin, coat, and digestive health.

Nutritional Benefits

  • Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA): Plant-based omega-3 fatty acid
  • Fiber: Both soluble and insoluble
  • Lignans: Antioxidant compounds
  • Protein: Contains some plant protein

Forms in Dog Food

  • Ground flaxseed: Most bioavailable form
  • Flaxseed meal: Similar to ground flaxseed
  • Flaxseed oil: Concentrated ALA source
  • Whole flaxseed: Less digestible (may pass through unprocessed)

Omega-3 Considerations

While flaxseed provides omega-3s, dogs must convert ALA to the more beneficial EPA and DHA. This conversion is inefficient in dogs (estimated 5-15%). For optimal omega-3 benefits, fish oil is more effective, but flaxseed still provides value.

Digestive Benefits

The fiber in flaxseed can help with:

  • Regular bowel movements
  • Digestive tract health
  • Feeling of fullness (helpful for weight management)

Quality Notes

Look for ground or milled flaxseed rather than whole seeds. Ground flaxseed is more digestible and allows dogs to access the nutrients inside. Whole seeds may pass through the digestive tract intact.

Flaxseed should be stored properly and used before it goes rancid, as the oils can oxidize. Quality dog foods use fresh flaxseed and include natural preservatives.
